Community

MISSION STATEMENT

The Glacier Lab is an interdisciplinary group that explores the societal aspects of glaciers, icebergs, snow, and water worldwide. Our research seeks to understand how systemic power disparities and the marginalization of certain knowledges affect people’s ability to address climatic and cryospheric change. We prioritize collaboration across career stages that includes undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in projects and public-facing service activities. Our Lab is a space to build community, to promote environmental justice, and to support each other in holistic and integrated ways.

CORE VALUES

Build community

Building community means creating a sense of purpose, mutual trust, and safety among Glacier Lab members. We show compassion, interest, respect, and professionalism in relation to all work, projects, and ideas. We encourage members to incorporate their individual experiences and identities in their work. It means open, humble, and honest communication about progress, frustrations, excitement(s), etc. Most importantly, we celebrate each other’s accomplishments. The lab strives for equity and inclusion among its members, with a commitment to shared opportunities, credit, and professional development.

Promote environmental justice

Members of the Glacier Lab work on research projects around the world—we study ice, snow, and water across all latitudes and elevations. While our research topics are broad, our interests converge in how we think about our projects and which questions we choose to ask. Throughout Glacier Lab research exists a dedication to promoting environmental justice. We prioritize justice through our individual work, and we also come together as a group to discuss the broader importance of environmental, climate, and glacier justice.

Support each other holistically

We are more than Glacier Lab members. Each of us has our own interests, goals, and needs. We recognize that supporting each other means more than talking about research and scholarship–it means taking the time to understand what someone needs within the context of their life. This hinges upon our adherence to four key principles that help us support each other in holistic ways: respect, collaboration, humility, and accountability.
